In stark contrast to the miraculous four days of beautiful sunshine, including the Pre-Party, 2013 seemed to return to the "usual"FUJI ROCK. The four days were characterized by typical mountain weather, with strong sunlight in the morning, rain (or even heavy rain) in the afternoon, and the moon appearing at night. Still, the Fuji Rockers trudged about with high spirits, enjoying the live music and food, and I was reminded of their toughness, and felt encouraged by the heroic performances of their comrades, who had all been through Naeba together.
Nine Inch Nails, Björk, The Cure. The lineup of headliners was likely one many fans would have fond memories of. Even the ARTISTS themselves seemed to have a special connection to their Fuji performance. Nine Inch Nails, who made a sudden comeback and chose Naeba for the glorious first day, used the lightning-filled downpour conditions as if they were part of the performance, creating a stunning sense of tension with their incredible live performance. Björk, who had been waiting for her first performance in 10 years in Naeba, had the power to change everything with a single voice, filling the venue with a sense of happiness. The Cure, who were thought unlikely to perform again, played for three hours, far exceeding the scheduled time, with Robert Smith's ethereal voice still in perfect health.
In addition to the spectacular headliners, the festival also featured a host of notable artists, including EDM king Skrillex, who delivered an aggressive live performance featuring a massive stage set and impactful special effects like pillars of fire; Brahman, who dominated the Green Stage with an overwhelming live performance; My Bloody Valentine, who captivated fans with their intoxicating noise; Jurassic Five, who made a comeback to enthusiastically support their longtime ARTISTS; Tamio Okuda, making his first appearance in 13 years; Garth Hudson of the legendary The Band; Mumford & Sons, who finally arrived in Japan; and Relativity Theory, whose live performances are rare. Wilko Johnson, who is currently battling illness, not only shook the soul with his appearance but also with the direct sound that lives up to his nickname "Mr. Machine Gun Guitar."
FUJI ROCK has 14 stages, large and small, each with its own unique character and color, but they also added a small stage called BUSKER STOP. Performances on a compact set, open to all genres, were well received.
Aiming for the coexistence of music and nature, FUJI ROCK has been working on various environmental measures since its inaugural year. Many people participate in and support "FUJI ROCK Forest," a project to protect the forest environment surrounding the venue, through boardwalk camps and use of the on-site kids' land. Within the festival, the festival also provides a stage for the anti-nuclear, anti-nuclear event "The Atomic Cafe," providing an opportunity to consider switching to natural energy sources. With natural disasters occurring more frequently around the world these days, the importance of environmental conservation is even more apparent.
As part of the Great East Japan Earthquake Reconstruction Support Project "Benefit for NIPPON," we once again conducted a donation drive this year to support the victims. We placed donation boxes inside and outside the venue during the event, and received generous donations from many attendees. We also held a charity auction featuring items such as chairs autographed by performers from all five stages over the three days of FUJI ROCK. The FUJI ROCK Festival festival has remitted the donations received from everyone, along with the total amount won in the charity auction, as detailed below.
